It is the symbolic date of June 5, 2009, World Environment Day, which was chosen for this simultaneous - and mostly free - in all media: film, TV, DVD and Internet. The objective of Yann Arthus-Bertrand, director, Luc Besson, distributor, and Francois-Henri Pinault, chairman of PPR, official support of the film, and is to reach as high as possible, and convince us that we all have a responsibility towards the planet.

The boom in soya production in the Southern Cone of Latin America is one of the most destructive agricultural developments of the last twenty years.The corporations that boom are now moving aggressively into sugar cane, focusing on large tracts of land in southern countries where they can produce cheap sugar.If this development does not cause a reaction, the impact could be severe: local food production will be overrun, workers and communities will face displacement and exposure to increased levels of pesticides, and foreign agribusiness will tighten its grip on sugar production.We try in this article to see the relationship between the development of sugarcane genetically modified (GM) and changes in the sugar industry in the world.
In ten years, nearly the entire Argentine pampas and huge swathes of forest and farm land in Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay and Paraguay have been converted into green deserts of soya monoculture. [ 1 ] The soya boom in Latin America has been and still is, a bonanza for agribusiness. He provided the handful of grain giants who dominate the international oilseed and forage land cheap and fertile for the expansion and consolidation of their activities in the world. These same companies, Cargill, ADM and Bunge they have also made billions in profits with sales of required chemical fertilizers. Other major foreign companies, such as AGCO and John Deere, have cashed in tractor sales. Monsanto and Syngenta to have raked in record profits with their genetically modified seeds and chemical pesticides.
The soya invasion is based on a production model based on the use of genetically modified seeds that can withstand huge doses of chemical herbicides. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) has just published a call for an immediate moratorium on genetically modified food.
In a new monograph on GMO foods, the AAEM states that "GM food poses a serious health risk" and requires a moratorium on genetically modified food. Citing several animal studies, the AAEM concludes that " there are more than just a casual connection between GMO foods and adverse health effects, "and that" GM foods pose a serious health risk in toxicological, allergic and immune to the balance of reproductive, metabolic , physiological and genetic."This report is a devastating blow against the international food industry billions of dollars, especially against Monsanto Corporation, the world's leading suppliers of GMO seeds and herbicides.
In a press release dated May 19, 2009, the AAEM, which describes itself as "an international association of physicians and professionals concerned with addressing the various clinical aspects of environmental health," called to take immediate measures emergency following, regarding human consumption of GMOs:
* A moratorium on GMOs; immediate implementation in the long term safety testing and labeling of GMOs.
* Physicians should counsel their patients, the medical community and the public, need to avoid GM food.
* Physicians should consider the role of GM foods in the pathological process of their patients.
* Other independent scientific studies of long duration should begin gathering data to study the role of GM foods on human health.
Dr. Amy Dean, president of the AAEM, notes that "numerous animal studies have shown that GM food damages the various body systems.Before the rise of these evidences, it is imperative for the safety of our patients and public health, to obtain a moratorium on genetically modified food."The president of the AAEM and Dr. Jennifer Armstrong pointed out that" physicians are probably seeing the effects in their patients, but need to know how to ask the right questions.GM foods most common in North America, are corn, soybeans, rapeseed oil and cottonseed.."The AAEM monograph on GM can be found onaaemonline.org.
This document also states that genetic engineering "repeals the natural reproductive process, the selection being made at a single cell, the procedure is highly mutagenic and always opens a breach in the genetic barrier, and that the technique is used to commercially for 10 years."
The document also states that AAEM several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with consumption of GM foods, including infertility, dysregulation of immune function, accelerated aging, dysregulation of genes related for the synthesis of cholesterol, the regulation of insulin, to cellular communications, and the formation of proteins, and liver damage, kidney, spleen and gastrointestinal system."
He adds: "There are more than just a casual connection between GMO foods and adverse health effects. There is a causal link, as defined by Hill's criteria, in terms of high level associations, consistency, specificity, biological gradient, and biological plausibility.Consistency and high association between GM foods and disease are confirmed by several animal studies."
