ending December 21, 2012!

About eight years ago, John Major Jenkins and myself had a discussion about the significance of the date of the end of the Mayan calendar, the question being more precisely if the energies of the Long Count ends on October 28 2011 or December 21, 2012.
This is still the most important point that faces anyone interested to "2012 phenomena", but then at the time the debate might seem theoretical, or even give respect to procrastinate, this is now a subject that has huge implications and concrete in how we view the future.
While many people would want to obscure the subject or pussyfoot about this deadline, no one can do while keeping intact its intellectual integrity.
From this discussion, Jenkins appeared in a documentary about a TV channel dedicated to History (History Channel), where 21 December 2012 is presented as a specific date to advance'' like that of a "Last Judgment" which affect the world to an end. I get lots of letters, sometimes from young people who are concerned that the world will end at that time since they saw this documentary posted on YouTube.
While most educated people certainly reject this way of presenting the Mayan calendar, it is still important to ask who it benefits.
Apart from the people participating in these documentaries, I also feel that there actually many people who claim that the Mayan calendar will shut down Dec. 21, 2012. However, I do not think that we did not hear about in the media of October 28, 2011 is due to chance.
